🌺 The Pink October movement and the importance of prevention

What is Pink October?

You will certainly not have missed it: pink umbrellas and banners adorn public furniture in your city. Pink October is a moment of action in the year coordinated with the League against Cancer to mobilize public opinion on the breast cancer.

A cancer that kills too many women still, today. Breast cancer is the most fatal cancer in women in France. The Pink October event serves to promote the breast cancer screening, a cancer that in many cases can be cured if diagnosed early (in 90% of cases).

Actions, meetings, forums, marches, races, many different events are organized throughout the month of october in order to arouse curiosity and interest. Health professionals are called upon to participate in order to inform andinform the public.

It is important that the public can access information in a simple, direct and relaxed way. It is not a question of a hospital, an appointment with a practitioner you do not know and a strict, narrow and timed framework.

Some events require a small financial contribution (organizing races, for example). All funds are then donated. donations make it possible to help patients in their daily lives (aid for the financing of a breast prosthesis, a treatment session) or to fund research.
So don't hesitate any longer and come to your city to take part in one of the many gatherings, workshops or events organized.

Prevention

Talk about it again and again, inform, ask questions, don't be afraid to disturb. Don't forget that the cancer kills. Dare to speak out and save you! Dare to ask questions at your next doctor's appointment. Dare to meet with associations.

It is so important to get tested when we know that one in eight women in France is at risk of being affected by breast cancer during her lifetime. Every year in France, 58 500 women suffer from breast cancer. Only 1 out of 2 women performs a screening examination.

What does screening consist of?

From the age of 25, it is important to have a simple check-up by a health professional every year. This clinical examination is a simple breast palpation. The palpation is extremely fast (a few seconds) and is not painful. To the menopause, it is recommended to make a mammography every two years.
All these examinations are fully covered by social security.

And the self-assessment?

Although it does not replace the expert hands of a healthcare professional (doctor, midwife or gynecologist), Thebreast self-examination is a good way to prevent it. Very simple to do, it involves inspecting and examining your breasts yourself. You can do this regularly. How to do it?
  • Examine her breasts after her period.
  • Visually inspect them first for any differences, asymmetry, swelling or other unusual features. Check for discharge from the nipples.
  • To palpate properly, raise the arm of the breast being palpated and palpate with the opposite hand. With the tips of your fingers, carefully inspect the breast, from the nipple outwards, to the armpit.
We recall that in no case theself-examination does not replace a visit to a doctor! We also do not advocateself-diagnosis. On the other hand, self-palpation can be a signal to consult if you feel a mass or abnormal discomfort under your fingers. This allows you to rule out the risk of cancer. It is a preventive gesture and behavior that can save.

Breast cancer and all the others...

In October, we talk a lot about the breast cancer. Let's not forget the other cancers that women are exposed to. gynecological cancers are numerous: cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer and even fallopian tube cancer.
