The Pink October movement and the importance of prevention
What is Pink October?
You will certainly not have missed it: pink umbrellas and streamers adorn public furniture in your city. Pink October is a moment of action in the year coordinated with the League against Cancer to mobilize public opinion on the breast cancer. A cancer that still kills too many women today. Breast cancer is the most fatal cancer in women in France. The Pink October event serves to promote the breast cancer screening, a cancer that in many cases can be cured if diagnosed early (in 90% of cases).
Actions, meetings, forums, walks, races, many different events are organized throughout the month of October to arouse curiosity and interest. Health professionals are called upon to participate in order to inform andinform the public. It is important that the public can access information in a simple, direct and relaxed manner. There is no question of a hospital, of an appointment with a practitioner that you do not know and of a strict, narrow and timed framework.
Prevention
Talking about it again and again, informing, asking questions, not being afraid to disturb. Remember that cancer kills. Daring to speak can save you! Dare to ask questions at the next appointment with your doctor. Dare to meet the associations. It is so important to get tested when we know that one in eight women in France is at risk of being affected by breast cancer during her lifetime. Every year in France, 58 500 women suffer from breast cancer. Only 1 out of 2 women performs a screening examination.
What does screening consist of?
From the age of 25, it is important to carry out a simple check-up by a healthcare professional every year. This clinical examination is a simple palpation of the breasts. The palpation is extremely fast (a few seconds) and is not painful. To the menopause, it is recommended to make a mammography every two years.
All these examinations are fully covered by social security.
And the self-assessment?
- Examine her breasts after her period.
- Visually inspect them first for any discrepancy, asymmetry, swelling, or anything else unusual. Check that there is no discharge from the nipples
- To properly palpate, raise the arm from the palpated breast and palpate with the opposite hand. With your fingertips, carefully inspect the breast from the nipple outward to the armpit.
Breast cancer and all the others...
In October, we talk a lot about the breast cancer. Let's not forget the other cancers to which women are exposed. The gynecological cancers are numerous: cancer of the cervix, cancer of the endometrium, cancer of the ovaries, cancer of the vulva, cancer of the vagina or cancer of the fallopian tube.
Treatments vary. They also depend on the stage of advancement of the cancer. Some signs should alert: pelvic pain, abdominal pain, menstruation very abundant. Some cancers are sneakier with an absence of symptoms. Hence the importance of consulting regularly, not missing your smears and making an appointment for screenings.
