I - Cup sterilizer: Why sterilize your cup?
Because yes, before talking to you about different methods to sterilize a menstrual cup, it is useful to know why we must carry out such careful washing of our intravaginal hygienic protection.
Designed from medical silicone, very soft, the cup is like a reservoir: it collects your menstrual flow in a super efficient way. When removing it, you empty it and rinse it before replacing it at the entrance to your vagina. At the beginning of each period of loss (at the start of your period), it is necessary to wash it more intensively than a simple rinsing with clean water with the aim of neutralizing any bacteria that could have proliferated.
In fact, as the cutting of rules is a durable and reusable internal periodic protection, its cleanliness must be ensured constantly. So cup brands recommend diligent maintenance. It's important but not that boring, I promise. We'll explain the procedure to you!
II - When should you sterilize your menstrual cup?
At two specific times, sterilization of a menstrual cup is mandatory:
- When you receive your cup, it is important to sterilize it in order to clean it properly.
- at all start of your period as you prepare to wear it. So you start your menstruation peacefully with very clean protection.
You can also sterilize your cup at other times if you feel the need:
- During your menstruation, if you attach great importance to hygiene, you can sterilize your cup and alternate also with another cup. So you do a rotation and always use a sterilized cup.
- Your period is over (phew!), you can clean your cup by sterilizing it. Once dry, slip it into its dust-free pouch.
Please note: Sterilization must be performed upon first use and at the beginning of each menstrual cycle. You can also sterilize more frequently if you wish.

Microwave cup sterilizer
To sterilize your cup, you can therefore use the microwave. You have to remove the lid of the sterilizer cup for menstruation and then place it in, the stem down. Then add water. To finish, just put the sterilizer in the microwave at 750 watts for 5 minutes. That's it, it's very simple, the sterilization is done. Once the time is up, be careful not to burn yourself when taking it out. Allow the cup to cool for several minutes before using it.
cup saucepan sterilizer
If you don't have a microwave or prefer another method, you can do boil water in a saucepan, for example. The next step: put the cup inside the sterilizer, placing the stem down. Without burning yourself, cover with boiling water, then leave to stand for 5 minutes. You have to wait for it to cool or by passing the cup under cold water.
The 2 methods are very simple, it's up to you to choose the one you prefer.
2 - With a pan of boiling water
If you don't have a sterilizer (or not yet), you can also immerse your cup in a pan of simmering water for several minutes. Between 5 and 10 minutes, no more. Be careful to prevent your cup from touching the edges of the pan. Then let it cool on a clean towel before using it.
