Why sterilize your cup?
Because yes, before talking to you about different methods to sterilize a menstrual cup, it is useful to know why we must carry out such careful washing of our intravaginal hygienic protection.
Designed from medical silicone, very soft, the cup is like a reservoir: it collects your menstrual flow in a super efficient way. When removing it, you empty it and rinse it before replacing it at the entrance to your vagina. At the beginning of each period of loss (at the start of your period), it is necessary to wash it more intensively than a simple rinsing with clean water with the aim of neutralizing any bacteria that could have proliferated.
In fact, as the cutting of rules is a durable and reusable internal periodic protection, its cleanliness must be ensured constantly. So cup brands recommend diligent maintenance. It's important but not that boring, I promise. We'll explain the procedure to you!
When to sterilize your menstrual cup?
At two specific times, sterilization of a menstrual cup is mandatory:
- When you receive your cup, it is important to sterilize it in order to clean it properly.
- at all start of your period as you prepare to wear it. So you start your menstruation peacefully with very clean protection.
You can also sterilize your cup at other times if you feel the need:
- During your menstruation, if you attach great importance to hygiene, you can sterilize your cup and alternate also with another cup. So you do a rotation and always use a sterilized cup.
- Your period is over (phew!), you can clean your cup by sterilizing it. Once dry, you slip it into its dust-proof pouch.
Please remember: sterilization must be carried out upon first use and at the start of each menstrual cycle. If you wish, you can also sterilize it more often.
Sterilization of the menstrual cup: two solutions
When you have one or more menstrual cups, the sterilization phase is therefore an obligatory step. But how to operate? You have two solutions. You can place your cup in a dedicated sterilizer and pass it through microwave or you can put your cup inboiling water. We explain everything to you in detail.
With a menstrual cup sterilizer
Louloucup offers its own sterilizers. Super practical, inexpensive, pretty and discreet, they save you time. They can be purchased individually or in a box with the cup of your choice. The sterilizer can be used in two ways: in the microwave or without a microwave.
Louloucup cup sterilizer is turquoise blue or pink in color, it is very practical and aesthetic. To store it, it can be folded, it measures: 91 mm by 12 mm. To use it, simply unfold it, its dimensions then change: 91 mm by 88 mm. Sterilization is thus quick and easy.
You have 2 options for using the Louloucup cup steriliser. Simply unfold it, remove the lid and place the menstrual cup inside. Then you can either use the microwave or boiling water. Try both to find the method that works best for you. In both cases, before using the cup for menstruation, it must be left to cool or run under cold water. This helps to avoid possible burns.
Microwave cup sterilizer
To sterilize your cup, you can therefore use the microwave. You have to remove the lid of the sterilizer cup for menstruation and then place it in, the stem down. Then add water. To finish, just put the sterilizer in the microwave at 750 watts for 5 minutes. That's it, it's very simple, the sterilization is done. Once the time is up, be careful not to burn yourself when taking it out. Allow the cup to cool for several minutes before using it.

If you don't have a microwave or prefer another method, you can do boil water in a saucepan, for example. The next step: put the cup inside the sterilizer, placing the stem down. Without burning yourself, cover with boiling water, then leave to stand for 5 minutes. You have to wait for it to cool or by passing the cup under cold water.
